IdeaPaint

In a recent issue of Inc., they shortlisted '30 under 30' (30 entrepreneurs under age 30). One of them is John Goscha, age 25 who is the founder of IdeaPaint. I was intrigued and looked them up online. I was glad to discover that they had some really attractive branding and packaging for their product, IdeaPaint - dry erase surface paint.

"IdeaPaint is a single-coat, roller-applied paint that can turn any “paintable” surface into a dry-erase surface. Essentially, IdeaPaint can create a whiteboard environment wherever your ideas might take form (walls, columns, doors, refrigerators, bathrooms, etc.)—but it’s less than half the cost of a traditional whiteboard and better performing. IdeaPaint is also the most environmentally friendly dry-erase product on the market, with limited packaging, transport and materials required."

The branding and packaging was designed by Jones. Big graphic elements were used to emphasize the product's simplicity. 50 square feet. Mix THIS into THAT. I really like the honest simplicity. By creating a look that is totally different from the usual paint product category, Jones achieved a standalone look that differentiates IdeaPaint from all other regular paint.

Beeswing Limited

Bombini is the latest in a series of private label wines commissioned by Beeswing Limited, a family owned and operated Alberta-based wine and champagne importer. This wine is from the Mendocino region of northern California. To celebrate the wines growing region, the wines were named after bug species found in Mendocino County. Bombini White - Named after a tribe of bumblebees found in Mendocino County on California’s north coast.

The aesthetic of the labels is one of warmth and nostalgia, with illustration and typography cues taken from vintage fruit labeling. This design solution creates a shelf presence that it is relaxed and unpretentious amongst more ‘traditional’ looking labels. Designed by Marie Hohner of Vision Creative Inc. in Alberta, Canada.

Scope Outlast

Webb Scarlett deVlam send us their newest work for Scope Outlast mouthwash packaging (structural design). The design's main merit is in its structural form. This is probably the nicest-looking mouthwash bottle I've seen yet, and there's a good reason for making it so. According to Christine McGovern, brand manager for Scope, studies have shown most consumers tend to put their mouthwash under their cabinet. If the bottle design is elevated, people would be more inclined to leave it out on the counter in full  view so they're more likely to use twice a day in their oral health regimen.

“We purposely put this product in a bottle that would speak to the consumer that this is something new and different. We really wanted to reinvent Scope with this,” said McGovern. “We are also trying to drive more consumption. One of the things we’ve learned is that consumers tend to put the bottle underneath their cabinet so if you want consumers to use the product twice a day as part of their routine if it is out of sight it could be out of mind. Having a bottle that is counter-worthy can help drive more usage and consumption to help bring those extra sales to the marketplace.”

Brand Spotlight: CO Bigelow

Using only the finest quality ingredients and most effective active apothecary extracts most formulations have been selected right from C.O. Bigelow's historical formula books dating back to 1838. Others were inspired by traveling the world scouring for intriguing ingredients and indispensable remedies."

Brand Spotlight: ASKUL by Stockholm Design Lab

A beautiful selection of work by Stockholm Design Lab for ASKUL focusing on "clarity":

"ASKUL is a rapidly expanding Japanese mail-order company. The company offers 41,000 items rating from OA/PC Supllies, stationary, furniture and food to clothes. The product range includes well-known brands but also the company's own private brand products.

Stockholm Design Lab has mainly worked with design for ASKUL's private brand. Our aim has been to distinguish these products in a clear and graphical way: clarity equals more sales. The key has been to find and use symbols that are easy for the customers to understand at first glace, for example the size (1-4) for the batteries, the drops for the wet wipes and the line space for the note books."

Hennessy Black

Hennessy Black's new cognac packaging is a study in contrasts. A black/silver/gray color scheme is elegantly portrayed with impeccable attention to detail. A glossy black finish allows the bottle to better catch the light. The new hot-pressed silver logo block emphasizes the stylized "armed arm". The top of the bottle represents a black chain-mail armor on a gun-colored gray background, which perfectly suits the shape of the metallic cap. The 1785 matte black medallion has been redesigned (although a bit hard to see in this photo) and the informative back label is silk screen printed.

Curius is the design agency behind this design. They  do a lot of work for premium brands. About Curius: Curius offers global and specialized services, making strategy and creation equally important. Created in 2003 by Pascal Viguier, the company applies generous, practical and lively design. They have done work for brands including, Bollinger, Hennessy, Lacoste, MSN, Sodexho and more.

Brand Spotlight: Crayola (Updated)

Here's an interesting retrospective of Crayola's packaging through the years at top. The bottom photo features the recent limited-edition set of three boxes with the original graphics of each era of the brand's history. The one on the far right most resembles what I remember from grade school! Ah nostalgia.
