Before & After: Lionshead Beer

Lionshead

The Lion Brewery, one of the oldest remaining breweries in Pennsylvania, tapped Little Big Brands to overhaul their signature Lionshead brand. Lionshead, a popular East Coast college beer received a complete packaging makeover with authentic graphics, tongue-in-cheek neck labels and “paw holes” on the six-pack. Higher quality materials were sourced, while considering environmental impacts. The smaller labels, which use 40 percent less paper than previous labels, and unbleached kraft stock for baskets and cartons.

“Lionshead was just good fun to work on. It’s a brand that doesn’t take itself too seriously and lends itself to creative thinking,” said John Nunziato, creative director, Little Big Brands.

"This redesign was about lightheartedly peeling back layers and viewing them through a youthful lens with an eye to bringing back the heritage, quality and quirkiness that the brewery has represented for more than 100 years," said Ron Hammond, CEO, Lion Brewery. "We're excited to introduce our new, improved brand to the world, and to continue restoring the brewery to its former glory."

All Season Wild Bird Store

Imagehaus_01

Imagehaus designed these great-looking bird seed bags for All Season Wild Bird Store of California. These private label store brand bags are surprising stylish in a category filled with the typical multi-color printed plastic bags with clear windows. These also look more durable and capable of standing up better than the flexible plastic bags you usually find for bulk bird seed.

Krink K-66 Steel Tip Marker

Krink ink and markers have become the new standard (and recently know for the new dripping ink aesthetics). The brand started with under the traditional "demand premise" due to dissatisfaction with existing products in the art supply market. All markers and inks are handmade in the USA.

Personally, I have never had the desire to purchase these products, simply because I have no need for them - but once they hit the scene a few years ago, the packaging immediately caught my eye.

New from KRINK are the K-66 Steel Tip Markers which currently come in 10 different colors including black, white, silver, red, blue, green, yellow, purple, pink, orange. image via Hypebeast.

Studio Spotlight: The Engine Room

479_popcorn_samplers

The Engine Room is an award-winning brand identity design firm in San Francisco with a focus on consumer packaged goods businesses. Established in 1999 by Dave Braden and Mike Cotsifas, the company's objective is simple: to help create endearing design that enhances culture.

The company believes in the importance of being different. The reason: now more than ever before, consumers are faced with having to choose between dozens of products on the shelf within almost every category. For a brand to have its best chance of success, consumers need to be given a reason why to pick this product over that one. Otherwise, it's a coin toss.

Too often, businesses are tempted to employ cookie-cutter solutions for their visibility challenges, thinking that what's worked for others should work for them. But, the more generic a brand becomes, the more we disable our consumer's ability to decipher it from the next one. Being different just for the sake of being different isn't so interesting. But if the difference has a positive purpose behind it, things are more easily remembered.

Jurlique Holiday

Jurlique_handcare_acostadesign_2

Not long after posting about Jurlique's innovative dieline, I received an email from Acosta Design in NYC. They were recently tasked with creating sustainable packaging for Jurlique's holiday gift sets. The challenge was to maintain the brand essence, while standing out in retail and adding color to a product that is mostly white. I just had to share the beautiful results. Here's how Mauricio Acosta describes the project:

Our involvement with Jurlique started when we were approached by Jo
Ann Stabile (Creative Director and Brand Strategist for Jurlique).
Our task was to design a holiday gift package that would complement
Jurlique's biodynamic agricultural methods, new packaging, and a
design that would stand out against other holiday gift sets.

Our goal with the design was to create a “painting” effect using
photographs and textures of each Jurlique ingredient. The result was
a collection of designs unique to each gift set and symbolic of the
biodynamic process used to create each Jurlique product.

What makes this a sustainable package is printing process used.  We
worked with one of the leading sustainable printing companies in the
USA to insure that all the right sustainable processes were met.  All
printing was done using sustainable printing practices under ISO
14001:2004 certification, FSC and SFI Chain-of-Custody certified
papers, Soya (vegetable oil) based-inks and 100% renewable wind power.
The results were a sleeve and carton made out of 100% recycled fibers
and 100% recyclable.
