In the UK, about a fifth of consumers buy alcohol online, which of course includes wine. The UK has a significant wine market, and a third of all alcohol consumed is wine.

Ordering wine online has a lot of benefits: consumers can research the wines that strike their fancy with ease, compare prices, and then conveniently order wine from their home, office, or wherever they are via smartphone.

The only downside for UK shoppers is that wine bottles are round and made of glass, and most won’t fit through a mail slot (or letterbox as they’re called on the other side of the pond). If you just so happen to receive your postage through a letter slot in your front door, the bottle would likely break from the fall.

Garçon Wines saw this problem and set out to design a wine bottle specifically for e-commerce sales. The PET bottle is flat and lies inside in a cardboard shipping box. This plastic bottle weighs 87% less than a typical wine bottle and fits inside through most letterbox slots. This design not only better protects wine in-transit, but it’s also cheaper to ship.

Garçon’s bottles are also made from 100% recycled plastic and likewise are 100% recyclable once you’re finished with the vino-goodness contained within.

This flat design earned Garçon Wines Dow Chemical’s 2018 Diamond Finalist award for package innovation.

Flat design is great for wine bottles and convenient when it comes to for unassembled IKEA furniture. But for planets, not so much.
