Modernist Bavarian beer. AND UNION is a trio of a father, a son and his long time business partner and friend who currently work with four small family-owned and family-run Bavarian breweries. Aside from only partnering with smaller regional breweries, they also only make beer the old-fashioned way: with just barley, yeast, hops, and water.
What: Craft beer cans that keep things simple yet eye-catching with bright colors, minimal text, and an alluring texture.
What process did you go through to design the beer cans?
AND UNION: A can, compared to a bottle allows a much larger canvas to work on. We had to resist the temptation to take advantage of the bigger brandable surface and decided to commit even more to our design philosophy and pare things down even more than our bottles which are already rather focused.
How did you develop the textures for the range of beer?
AND UNION: We tried various approaches but in the end we decided to go with the simplest.
What influenced the color and font choice?
AND UNION: The colours exist in our current bottle range and the typeface is the same as our logo.
Why did you opt to can the beer rather than bottle it?
AND UNION: We’ve done bottles for quite a few years. Our focus is on cans moving forward.
Why did you you decide to also release a specialty AND UNION glass, and how did you create a design to complement the beer cans?
AND UNION: We weren’t satisfied that the glassware in the market reflected our design principles so we designed our own. We made quite an effort here to improve the drinking experience because again, we want to do our bit to help in dismissing the perception that cans are for cheap industrial beers.
Why we love it / Why we picked it: The intense hues and lack of text alone draw us in, but the real standout here is the texture. Before you even hold this can in your hand, it has you mesmerized with a linear design. And that’s part of the battle, isn’t it? Getting consumers to actually hold the product in their hands. We love how the AND UNION craft beer cans create a multi-sensory experience that is far more memorable than other beers in this saturated market.
