The Revolutionized Laxmi

Student 

Laxmi is an Indian food product brand known for using 100% organic ingredients in everything they produce. Ellie (Hyejin) Cho designed a new packaging concept for their line of spices, oils, and legumes.

“The five chosen items to be redesigned are spices, Basmati rice, chickpeas, canola oil, and cashews. The structured surfaces in the front and back of the packaging allow users to stack items very easily which is helpful to create organized kitchen space, and also beneficial for displaying on the shelf in modular system. The graphic patterns on the rice, chick peas, and cashew packagings are inspired by Indian Henna tattoo design to integrate Indian cultural aspect.”

“The new Laxmi's selection of aromatic vegetarian food products are designed in an alluring modular system to create a simple buying and organizing process and a streamlined user experience for people who enjoy cooking eclectic dish in their daily life.”

Cho’s redesign for Laxmi uses striking geometric shapes that allow the remainder of the packaging to remain simple while still speaking volumes. The angles in the spice containers and the boxes of chickpeas also allow for an easier grip, providing function in addition to beauty. Tans, light browns, and golds give it a refined look, and a sans serif font feels minimal yet elegant at the same time.

Laxmi

Get ready and pull out those curry and chicken tikka masala recipes! Laxmi is a concept from Gary Chang and Lucas Zheng that makes the process of cooking these delicious dishes in your own kitchen much easier.

“The Laxmi redesign provides a clear view and experience through precision cooking and modular construction while increasing the electricity of Indian culture throughout the design. It brings a new sensational perspective to create Indian food at home. Easing the process of traditional cooking and making it into a rewarding experience. Sensory is platform to inspire, explore, expand, and exchange your palette. We offer a library for you to express your creation. Let us bring the pleasure to your table.”

Laxmi offers spices, curry infused cubes, coconut flakes, yogurt, and more, all in packaging that is unique for each item. While they all fall under the brand, having a little bit of variety in the way everything looks gives consumers the feeling of possibility in what they cook. It also makes it easy for them to incorporate the ingredients into other non-traditional options as well. The color palette is generally soft, with light pastels and off-white hues, and the font choices are consistent throughout the entire line—a bold sans serif and a more traditional one. The packaging appears sleek and is well-suited for the modern kitchen.

Coloroid

Making art doesn’t necessarily have to be messy. Coloroid is a case to protect colored pencils that is beautiful and practical, too. This student project from Cece Li Makes it simple to keep pencils organized when they’re being stored and also when they’re in use.

Coloroid gives woodless color pencils extra protection and it is made of recycled materials; it’s durable and very sturdy. Coloroid is designed universal woodless color pencil size, so it is very convenient to buy refill pencils after purchasing one. Coloroid is more than a color pencil case; it is also a decoration and an organizer of your studio, workshop or your home.”

The wood case is incredibly striking and stands out against other colored pencil cases on the market. It’s also a natural material to choose, since colored pencils are also made of wood. Small hexagons on the case create a fun pattern and double as a way to keep pencils accessible while you’re working. Once the box is open, each pencil has its own designated spot, preventing them from getting jumbled up.

Ceylon Tea

Concept

 

Ceylon tea was made popular in the 19th and 20th centuries in the area that is now Sri Lanka. In a way to honor where the tea leaves come from, Klaudia Olejnik developed a concept for packaging that would give consumers a sense of the tea’s rich history.

“The inspiration was ceylon lion. I made an illustration of one. By the lion image I wanted to emphasise the place of origin of the tea. The contrast of two main colors in various tints is for quick recognising favourite tea.”

The vibrant colors on the packaging are instantly eye-catching, and it gives the atmosphere of an exotic jungle. Hiding behind large leaves, the lion head pops out at the front—a more modern-looking version of the typical image of a ceylon lion. Tins keep the tea leaves fresh so that buyers can enjoy a hot cup of tea made from premium leaves whenever the mood strikes.

Babel: Cook's Ingredients

Journey to flavors and fragrances from all over the world, right in your own kitchen. BABEL is geared toward the novice and professional alike, providing premium ingredients from a variety of different countries. Makrina Oikonomidou developed the concept to give a more authentic flavor to the dishes people prepare.

“BABEL is a company of unique flavors offering raw cooking materials and ingredients from all over the world. Each ingredient is collected in the country where it flourishes the most so as to give authentic flavour and smell in every dish. Olive oil from Greece, pink salt from Pakistan, ginger from China, clove from Indonesia, bay leaves from Turkey...a wide range of over 30 ingredients come from the four parts of the world to get together in your plate. It is addressed to everyone who adores cooking, both amateurs and professionals.”

“For the packaging design, I created a grid system, which can be easily adjusted to the numerous BABEL product needs. I have also chosen a specific number of shapes and sizes in both jars and bottles in order to make the product series harmonic. Every packaging is constructed handmade paper, made by the key ingredient, and screen printed in the characteristic color of the country of origin.”

Each product from BABEL features a simple line illustration in a coordinating color. The images show some indication of the place from where the product is sourced, such as the Taj Mahal for Indian black peppercorns or the Eiffel Tower for French dijon mustard. The handmade paper packaging has an imperfect look to it, with specks of different colors. This makes each one feel a little more special and also speaks to the act of cooking and preparing a unique dish.

Biologic

Student

What if the packaging for some of your favorite products could anticipate your needs? This is what Talia Douaidy’s concept for Biologic intends to do. The materials used for the items like lip balm, lotion, coffee cups, and more react to the environment, sending helpful messages to the consumer.

“The package can serve as a catalyst to enhance user experience. Through the use of smart materials, the package can be made clever enough to assess and eventually alter the way the product is consumed. Those engineered materials have the ability to react on their own, without any external machinery dictating their functions. Natural factors, like temperature, light, UV beams, water and humidity would be the only determining factors to affect the package’s properties like shape, appearance, form or texture. The changing properties enhance the benefits but also cater to the users’ long term vital needs. By visually and functionally imitating elements and systems found in nature, the line of packages developed in this thesis can solve and offer effective answers to many complex human challenges.”

In humid conditions, for example, the bottle for the preserving food can help indicate harmful bacterial growth. Spikes protrude from the coffee cup, preventing burns. This not only solves many basic problems that people face daily, but sets these products up as ones that should be displayed and interacted with regularly. Most lotions just sit on a shelf; instead, lotion using Biologic packaging is meant to be seen and communicates to the buyer on a regular basis.
