Even if you’ve never visited Tokyo, you’ve undoubtedly seen images with those iconic neon, bright lights. Taking this inspiration, Ström & Jag developed the packaging for Nikka Tokyo Edition whiskey a Duty Free limited edition offering. The goal was to communicate the heritage of Nikka whiskey, incorporate urban elements, and present it in a modern, simple way.

“Nikka Whisky is a Japanese whisky brand, with its headquarter in Tokyo, Japan. The Japanese founder Masataka Taketsuru studied the art of whisky distilling in Scotland, and with his knowledge he came back to Japan and started Nikka in 1934. Today, the company operates a number of distilleries in Japan.”

The graphic pattern created from the lights of Tokyo is beautiful by itself, but especially striking next to the relatively classic-looking bottle. The heritage of whiskey-making and the aesthetics of a place meet, and the result is a harmonious mix that tells a tale of history, location, and quality, all with just a few graphics. Against the black packaging, the bright colors stand out. Opening the box reveals a Japanese whiskey with a traditional touch that brings a perfect balance to Nikka Tokyo Edition.
