This week's session post focuses on Katie Jain and Joel Templin founders and creative directors of Hatch Design.

Katie Jain is a co-founder and creative director of Hatch Design, where she has directed award-winning identity, packaging, advertising and interactive design for some of the world's most powerful brands, including Apple, Benefit Cosmetics, Coca-Cola, Harrah's, Hilton, Starbucks and others. Katie graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco, and began her career at Templin Brink Design. Her work was recently included in an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Katie is also co-founder of JAQK Cellars, a wine brand born out of a passion for design.

Joel Templin is a co-founder and creative director of Hatch Design, where he has directed award-winning identity, packaging, advertising and interactive design for some of the world's most powerful brands, including Apple, Benefit Cosmetics, Coca-Cola, Harrah's, Hilton, Starbucks and others. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Joel has worked for Gardner Design, Charles S. Anderson Design (CSA) and Foote Cone & Belding before he co-founded then directed Templin Brink Design for nine years. His work was recently included in an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Joel is also co-founder of JAQK Cellars.

The Session: The Power of Developing Your Own Brands

Hatch design, co-founded by Joel Templin and Katie Jain, is a branding design firm that has created brand identity, packaging, advertising, promotional and interactive design for a range if companies, including Apple, Benefit Cosmetics, Coca-Cola and more. But Hatch was also formed to be an incubator of ideas, with the goal of "hatching" its own brands. To that end, Hatch released JAQK Cellars, a premium wine brand dedicated to play, in 2008.

In this session, Joel and Katie will talk about the trials and tribulations of their foray into the world of entrepreneurship, as well as discuss new hatchlings, including a wine brand created for the Chinese market, a gourmet line of snack foods and an online Hatch shop—all built upon the principal that the best brands are honest, hands-on and human. You'll learn that if you put your money where your mouth is and build a brand based on a strong design story, then what you learn not only becomes a case study for the power of design, but will influence your client work as well.
