Student Spotlight: Arrogant Bastard Beer

Thanh Nguyen's redesign of Arrogant Bastard Beer received high praises after being featured in the "Hi-Rez" Senior Graphic Design exhibition at California State University, Northridge. Check it out after the jump!

"This was one of the first projects for my packaging class this semester: we had to repackage a food or drink product. We could either completely rebrand the product or stick with their existing logo. I chose to give the Arrogant Bastard beers a facelift using their existing logo. "

Design looks strangely familiar to the Mozza Restaurant Group:

Sorry, but this is worse than the original. You did not capture any of the Stone essence. Have you even tried their beer? Try again.

This is a very nice playful take on the brand. Catches my eye better than their current packaging.

It would make more sense to design a label for a 22 oz. bottle...seeing is that is how they are sold currently. Also, what happened to Stone Brewing on the front of the label? I think the mark was missed on this "re-design". A pink beer label? Seriously?

I have to agree with some of the previous posters: I think this design missed the mark on the brand personality. The product is very strong, rich and boldly flavored, and the design seems to communicate "delicate"... except for the original illustration. I guess this design is attractive and aesthetically well done, but totally wrong and poorly thought out for the product in question.

One MAJOR mistake here: the brewery is not called "Arrogant Bastard." Arrogant Bastard is one among many beers brewed by Stone Brewing.

Another thing that is a fairly major mistake and indicates a lack of research by the designer: The bottles are full of clear fluid... almost all of Stone's current branding and communications is all about differentiating their beers from the world of light-colored yellow fizzy beers!

I agree with all of the negative feedback this is getting.

This project reflects a lot of research in "cool" package design and non on the actual product.

This beer would kick your a$$ and take you to a metal concert not to Trader Joe's after knitting!

I can respect much of the criticism about the design except for one point: that she missed the mark by not including "Stone Brewing Co." on the label.

Check out the original Arrogant Bastard packaging--Stone itself doesn't include it either!
