Student Spotlight: Dapper Kentucky Straight Bourbon

05_10_11_dapper_1.jpg

Amy Dick, a student at Savannah College of Art and Design created this dapper label for a bourbon company. Check it out!

"Dapper is a small batch bourbon company that combines vintage with modern. It is for the contemporary gentleman. The whiskey should not only be suited for a gentleman but the packaging should also accessorize the modern gentleman. The name Dapper was influenced by the slang word used in 1920's."

I typically enjoy seeing student work on here. They are mostly impractical as far as real-world budgets and production constraints are concerned, but they usually show great imagination and are well designed. I wish I could be as enthusiastic about this piece. Although the overall look is "clean," I feel like the black label is extremely cumbersome and the distressed type and overall feel is a bit boring. Some more intensive exploration could have probably yielded better results.

I disagree with Jason. Although this project--for a student project--could be considered less "imaginative," it does seem to have a nice feel for real-world constraints. Wrap-around labels are not often seen in bourbon packaging (more often in wine) and are certainly a more affordable alternative to the typical customized glass bottle used by many bourbon companies. I think it's a realistic solution that would appeal to its target market.

I also like that the side of the bottle exhibits the label, so it could be displayed on shelf in a creative, space-saving way.

Maybe not the most out-of-the-box, but were this a real client, they'd likely be pleased.

I feel that this design is very well done. The production costs would not be high on a design that is nothing more than a bottle, a wrapper, a tag, and a box. I feel that bottle exemplifies exactly what the description says. It is a high quality, small batch bourbon that is made by hand. The bottle is very fitting because it has the handmade look and feel while still remaining clean and sophisticated. It really has that vintage feel while still remaining modern. I know this woud catch my eye in a liquor store more than the bottles that are out there now.

@Jason.

However, could it be that the minimalistic style presented within this design remarks the personality of what the distillery is trying to achieve? The black label is a common element within the burbon and whisky traditional style. The type presented however, help manifest the personality and its proper brand name, Dapper. Thus showing us that its plain and simple, elegant yet rugged.
