This year the event took place at the Westfield Culver City Shopping Mall in Los Angeles, California. Architects, designers, builders, and engineers came together to create art out of packaged food.
"Canstruction LA is organized by the Society for Design Administration. The event’s major sponsors include Westfield Corp., Federal Express, Herman Miller, The Gunlocke Company, The Architect’s Newspaper, Allsteel, Tom Bonner Photography, Howard Building Corporation, Dragonfly Design Group, AGS, Business Graffiti, and Jetro Cash & Carry. Over the last five years Canstruction LA has raised over 197,525 cans of food for the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank."
BEST USE OF LABELS: “CAN-opoly” by Callison and KPFF displayed spot-on color matching to the familiar game board, properties, railroad, utility, and community chest.JURORS’ FAVORITE: “Take a Bite out of Hunger” by RTKL Associates showed a candy-teethed shark made of beans emerging from water waves to feast on tiny goldfish. The jury found it to be “structurally amazing, graphically beautiful, and conceptually clever.”HONORABLE MENTION: “FEED the World, One Can at a Time” by DPR Construction and Studio SA shows a feedbag of uplifting colors with a simple and strong message.STRUCTURAL INGENUITY: “Feed Back Loop” by HMC Architects and Buro Happold Engineers was an intricate, abstract structure with a very powerful message.“LA canTRUCKtion” by ZGF Architects used beans of all kinds to depict a taco truck and celebrate the LA food truck trend.BEST MEAL: “A Gift for Hunger” by HKS Architects presents gift boxes from different food groups, all wrapped up in a shiny sardine-can ribbon.
