When, exactly, was it that people started misplacing the apostrophe in “li'l”? Is Lil' Kim now determining orthography for the world more generally?

Actually, it'd be more correct to write it as li'l' since the apostrophe denotes the admission of letters (in this case). Of course, none of this detracts from the act that this is still a nice idea.

The apostrophe denotes the omission of an otherwise sounded character, whereäs the ‘e’ in “little” is silent. So, no, “li'l'” wouldn't be better.

Nice ideas are especially deserving of literate presentation.

It's a good question why they decided to use this copy. But of course they can do as they please!
