Bottle & Jar Shaped Packets

JarBottlePackets

I noticed these jar-shaped Nutella packets—(top photo via: Notchet’s Flickr Photostream)—at a grocery store in Rome. (Did I mention I was in Rome a couple of weeks ago?)

Then today I saw this bottle-shaped Heinz Ketchup packet. They’re calling it their “Dip & Squeeze” dual-function package. (Photo via: Heinz Ketchup press release)

Makes
sense that packets should reference whatever form of packaging is most
associated with the product. As if to say, “Within this packet: the
same trusted product you know from the bottle.” Or jar.

(More Nutella & Heinz packet pictures & a video, after the fold...)

I'd be interested to know how much extra production and how much more waste this creates over normal squeeze packets. It seems like they are addressing a non-issue. What's wrong with squeezing the ketchup onto your plate to dip into?

This is a marketing gimmick not a solution to a real problem.

I'd like to know any cost/production savings as well. seems it would be more but perhaps the plastic foil packets are more costly and these are made without any foil and thus cheaper/better.

Does seem gimmicky to me too. Plus I feel you could easily grab a handful and pocket or what not with the old style. these seem clunkier to me. I did like the Nutella (they gave me some of them a while back to test/promote) but i see those as better than a condiment like ketchup. Nutella has a different feel to it.

I have always wondered if these little ketchup guys would come over to the US. Not exactly the Australian design yet, but creeping up on it. Their design similar to these has a great way of squishing the sauce out of the center of the packet, making zero mess and using the entire product without making a mess with your hands. One day we will finally see clearly and adopt that packaging.
