Jacob Heftman writes in to ask:

“How does a designer go into actual production on a packaging design project? I’m not talking about prepping files or any of the stuff a designer should definitely know – I’m talking sourcing the production. It seems the most daunting part of packaging design is getting the design actually produced, especially if you aren’t in an agency that has those sourcing channels already established. I should also append this to my question: I’m not just talking printing
on labels or folded cardstock. I’m wondering more about producing
things designed for molded plastic, custom shapes for glass bottles,
metal, etc.”
